Students Promote Access to Health Care Services in Houston

Students in Professor Abad's Spanish for Medical Professions (SPAN 321 and SPAN 322) classes participated once again in El Centro de Corazón's annual breast cancer awareness fair "A Crucial Catch Day" on Tuesday October 13, 2015. This year, students were in charge of a bilingual informative station where the attendees gathered practical information about various federal and state medical programs to which they have access at El Centro de Corazón’s community-based clinics. The students repeated the activities from last year’s fair, such as the breast cancer awareness and early detection bingo games.

Further service was offered by two more teams of volunteers who spread the word about the fair and health programs among the local community in Houston’s East End – 90% of its population being Hispanic - by visiting small businesses, churches, and other social meeting points.

Reading Corner

On Saturday November 22nd, 2014, students in Professor Abad's Spanish for Medical Professions class (SPAN 323) visited El Centro de Corazón non-profit clinic. With donations from CLIC that included furniture, books and wall decor, the students set up the clinic's Reading Corner. The day began with students setting up the reading corner while children and parents anxiously awaited. Once the corner was set up, the students took turns reading to the children books in Spanish. It is hoped that future Spanish for Medical Professional students will continue to visit the clinic and read to children.
